Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarms for the Hearing Impaired
Posted by ReNewed Hearing Solutions on July 19, 2013

Fire alarms might not be the first thing on your mind when considering lifestyle changes with your hearing aids. Usually people focus on the adjustment of the hearing aids, remembering to clean them and working on rehabilitation therapy to re-learn how to listen and understand words. However there is another aspect to hearing aids that needs to be considered. Being able to hear fire and carbon monoxide alarms is something very important to discuss and make arrangements for people with hearing loss.
It is best practice and highly advised to remove hearing aids before going to sleep. While safe for your hearing aids, removing them could turn problematic for the person with hearing loss if an alarm sounds in the house at night. Alarms emit a very high-pitched sound, usually within the range that is first lost for people with hearing problems. You want to keep yourself and family safe so there are a few options to consider.
Alarms are available that emit a much lower 520Hz tone that some people with high frequency hearing loss can hear. If you or a family member can’t hear anything without hearing aids, there are also combination alarm systems available that flash lights, sound an alarm and shake your bed to alert you. Phones can also be useful, specifically a landline phone that lights up when it’s ringing or a cellphone set to vibrate.
